What's on Pensacola Beach?
- Casino Beach. The main lifeguard towers on Pensacola Beach. Outside the busiest weeks, the county has staffed Casino Beach on weekdays and the other towers on weekends.
- Park East and Park West. Lifeguard towers in season, on the Gulf side.
- Quietwater Beach. On the Santa Rosa Sound side of the island, sheltered from Gulf waves, next to the Pensacola Beach Boardwalk with restaurants and shops.
What about Gulf Islands National Seashore?
The National Park Service says lifeguards may be on duty in summer, from mid-May through August, at three beaches:
- Langdon Beach in the Fort Pickens area, with accessible beach mats and beach wheelchairs. Parking is limited, and there are no rentals, so bring your own chairs and umbrella.
- Opal Beach in the Santa Rosa area, with restrooms, outdoor showers and picnic shelters.
- Johnson Beach in the Perdido Key area.
These areas charge an entrance fee, and the pass is good for seven days in every section of the park. No pets or glass containers on the beaches.
What about Perdido Key and Navarre?
- Perdido Key. In the 2026 season, Escambia County also staffed lifeguards at Beach Access #2.
- Navarre Beach Marine Park. A Santa Rosa County park at 8739 Gulf Boulevard, open 8 a.m. to sunset, with free parking that fills up on weekends. It has access points on both the Gulf side and the Santa Rosa Sound side. Navarre Beach Fire Rescue staffs lifeguards in season.
My page on Navarre covers the area around the beach.
What do the beach flags mean?
- Green. Low hazard. Swim with normal caution.
- Yellow. Medium hazard, with moderate surf or currents.
- Red. High hazard, with high surf or strong currents.
- Double red. The water is closed to the public.
- Purple. Jellyfish or other marine life are present.
For Pensacola Beach, text PBFLAGS to 888-777 for the daily flag, plus an update if it changes.
How do I plan a beach day, step by step?
- Check the season. Lifeguards are seasonal, and outside their dates you swim at your own risk.
- Check the flag. Before you leave and again when you arrive.
- Pick the water you want. The sound side for sheltered water, the Gulf side for waves.
- Plan for parking. Some lots are small and fill early on weekends.
- Bring what you need. Some beaches have no rentals, and the national seashore allows no pets or glass.
What mistakes do people make at the beach here?
- Assuming lifeguards are always on duty. They're seasonal.
- Ignoring the flag. Gulf conditions change during the day.
- Arriving late on a weekend. Parking fills up.
- Forgetting the park pass. Gulf Islands National Seashore charges an entrance fee.
What if beach access matters in my home search?
Here's an example of how I lay out the steps. It shows the process, and it isn't a real client's story.
- Your routine. How often you'd go, and which beach.
- The drive. Test it at the time you'd actually travel, including the bridges.
- The trade-offs. Homes near the water deserve a close look at the roof, the flood zone and insurance.
My pages on Gulf Breeze and Navarre cover two of the beach-side towns, and my post on what a Gulf Breeze address tells you helps you compare.
